Air Sampling Devices-Diffusive Type for Gases and Vapors in Working Environments, ANSI/ISEA 104-1998 (R2003)

This standard applies to products known as passive dosimeters, used for assessment of personal exposure to a variety of contaminants found in the workplace. Exposure assessment using passive dosimeters can be used in a wide range of industries and worksites. It is inexpensive, reliable, easy to use, and meets National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) criteria for monitoring accuracy.

Passive dosimeters rely on diffusion of contaminant molecules through a semi-permeable membrane to a sorbent collection medium. In a typical application, the user wears the dosimeter for a specified period of time, after which it is sent to a laboratory for analysis, to determine the worker exposure.

Passive dosimeters are available to detect a variety of contaminants including hydrocarbons; organic vapors, such as methylene chloride and butadiene; amines, such as ethanolamine; formaldehyde; and anesthetic gases.

ANSI/ISEA 104-1998 (R2003) provides guidance for end users in evaluating the appropriateness of samplers for various exposures. The evaluation parameters chosen for test methods in this standard will help define the operating limits of the sampler/monitor, and provide conditions for use. Devices that meet this standard will have uniform package labeling, which informs the user of appropriate sampler/monitor applications, controls and limitations, and provides instruction for correct use to obtain results that meet the NIOSH requirements for test accuracy.

ANSI/ISEA 104-1998 was developed by the ISEA Instruments Group, with the participation of more than 20 companies, organizations, government agencies and individuals to achieve consensus. It is recognized by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) as an American National Standard.
